The Secret of the Nagas, has been met with mixed reviews. The Secret of the Nagas is the second book of the Shiva Trilogy and begins from the moment where its prequel, The Immortals of Meluha, ended. It is a reminder that truth is one, though different religions approach Him differently, and that our paths may be different, but our destination is the same. The first book of the Shiva Trilogy, The Immortals of Meluha, was well receivedreceived. The author acknowledges those who made the journey possible, including Lord Shiva, Preeti, Sharvani Pandit, Rashmi Pusalkar, Anuj Bahri, Gautam Padmanabhan, Paul Vinay Kumar, Renuka Chatterjee, Satish Sundaram, Anushree Banerjee, Vipin Vijay Manisha Sobhrajani and the team at Westland.Chandan Kowli, Chintan Sareen, Prakesh Gor, Sagar Pusalkar, Sangram Surve, Shalini Iyer, Think Why Not, Kawal Shoor and Yogesh Pradhan, and the reader all contributed to the success of the Shiva Trilogy.
The boy was running as fast as he could towards his village when he was yanked by a large hairy arm and held tight. He was shocked to see the face of the beautiful woman he had just fled away from, but the mouth opened and a blood-curdling roar was heard. A grotesque arm holding a short sword came up from nowhere and decapitated the gorgeous head. The boy was shocked into stillness and felt his mother’s hand wrap around him and pull his tired head down to her bosom. He felt the fear release from his taut body and shed long held back tears. The narrator’s son, Shiva, is experiencing the same nightmare as his mother. His mother gently runs her hand over his face and tells him that if he had fought back, he would have been killed. Shiva’s mother explains that she was practical and did what she could to stay alive, and he starts sobbing again as some sense of comfort seeps into him.
Shiva and his wife, Sati, are chasing a hooded Naga down a hillside in Ayodhya. Shiva is shocked to find that the Naga is able to move so quickly between the trees and undulating ground of the hillside, showing surprising agility. Sati points to a fork in the path and they decide to split up and try to cut off the Naga from opposite ends on the narrow ridge ahead. Shiva quickly draws a knife and throws it at the Naga’s neck.Shiva was stunned by the Naga’s manoeuvre, which involved pulling his shield forward in the path of the knife and letting it clip on to his back. Shiva then saw the Naga reach the wall at the bottom of the hill, which protected the Ramjanmabhoomi temple from animal attacks and trespassers. The Naga then drew out two swords, one of which was a traditional long sword, glinting in the evening sun. Shiva attacked the Naga from his right with a short sword, while Sati attacked from his left with a long sword.Shiva then jumped high and struck down from his height, avoiding the Naga’s sword.Shiva and Sati were yet to get a single strike on the Naga, but he was being forced to retreat. Finally, the Naga swung ferociously, but the sword was too short to reach Shiva.
Shiva and Dilipa are discussing their mission to end the evil Chandravanshi way of life and bring the people back to Suryavanshi ways. Daksha, the crown prince of Ayodhya, is angry and wants to know how to find the Nagas, who are pure evil. Dilipa explains that the King of Branga consorts with the dark forces and that the Nagas are allied with the Neelkanth. Bhagirath is also angry and demands a certificate from a foreign barbarian to tell him what is obvious.Daksha and Shiva argue over the territory of Meluha, which is a confederacy of aligned kings. Shiva argues that being an emperor gives the emperor the right to receive tribute, but also the responsibility to work for the good of all the empire’s subjects. Daksha argues that people should be allowed to do whatever they wish, and that if they don’t, there will be chaos. Shiva responds by accepting his role as the Neelkanth and realizing that fulfilling his father’s dream of becoming Emperor of all India is becoming increasingly remote. Shiva and Dilipa are discussing the possibility that the Brangas are allied with the Nagas, based on rumours they have heard from traders in Kashi.Shiva is unsure if this is a wild goose chase or if there is something more to it. Sati suggests that the King of Kashi may have better answers.
General Parvateshwar was in charge of the expedition to Kashi, which was to travel east down the Sarayu on royal boats to Magadh and then west up the Ganga to Kashi. He had been inundated with requests from some of the Ayodhya nobility, such as one from a superstitious nobleman who wanted his boat to leave exactly thirty two minutes after the beginning of the third prahar. He was sure that Anandmayi must have some special arrangements she wanted made, such as carrying a ship hold of milk for her beauty baths.Princess Anandmayi and General Parvateshwar are on their way to the Sarayu, where Lord Ram had stopped with his Guru Vishwamitra and brother Lakshman on his way to slay the demon Tadaka. The princess is impressed by the beauty of the royal gardens and offers a puja to Lord Ram, but the General is mollified by her devotion to him. However, the General’s eyes seem to mock her and she is not getting the reaction that she had desired.Parvateshwar had suggested to one noble that he should rush to Kashi and set up a welcoming committee for the Neelkanth, and many others had followed, reducing the convoy to the size that Shiva desired. The puja platform was set up some fifty metres from the riverbank, and the Pandit sat in the innermost circle next to the Pandit. The earnest Brahmin was reciting Sanskrit shlokas in the exact same intonations that had been taught to him by his Guru. Sati had an uncomfortable feeling that someone was watching her, and when she opened her eyes, she saw Shiva gazing directly at her with his eyes open wide, reflecting an outpouring of love.
The book is a fun fast read with predictable plot twists, but if it is just a way to pass a few hours, it may be worth it.Shiva, the fabled savior of Meluha, rushes to save his wife Sati from a Naga who escapes, leaving behind coins with strange engravings. He and Sati travel to Kashi to get more information on the Nagas, accompanied by Parvateshwar, associates Nandi and Veerbhadra, Ayurvati the doctor, and Bhagirath and Anandamayi. At Kashi, Shiva learns that the herb is only available at Panchavati, the capital of the Nagas. Divodas orders special ships to be made for the journey. The author has a good command over the story, which is filled with secrets, shocks and betrayal. The reveal of the Naga’s identity was shocking, but the “secret” of the Nagas was something I had long suspected. However, many issues are not addressed properly, such as the Branga ritual and mysterious plague. The second book of the Star Wars trilogy is formulaic and not as good as the first.
