The Latter Confirmed That He Had Seen G Od, At Least As Clearly As He Had Seen Him. He Continued By Saying That If Naren Followed The Means To Realise G Od, He Would Follow Suit. The Very Rational Narendranath Was Drawn To This Promise Of Direct Experience With God Because Of Its Authenticity, And He Was Equally Moved By The Saint’s All-encompassing Love. Narendranath Eventually Acknowledged Sri Ramakrishna As His Spiritual Guide.
After Sri Ramakrishna Passed Away, Narendranath Gathered A Few Of His Fellow Disciples, And In December 1886 They All Took The Sannyasa Vow (Renunciation And Monastic Life). They Resided In A Transient Monastic Building In Baranagore, Kolkata. There, From 1888 And 1889, He Resided. He Also Visited Other North Indian Pilgrimage Sites.
In 1890, Driven By A Deep Spiritual Yearning For Godrealization, He Finally Became A Parivrajaka (Monastic Wanderer). He Travelled Throughout The Length And Breadth Of The Nation During The Course Of The Next Two Years, Stopping At Places In The Modern States Of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, And Hyderabad. He Received His Monastic Name, “Vivekananda,” At This Time. From Kings And Merchants To The Poorest Of The Poor, He Met A Variety Of People. He Welcomed The Hospitality Of Muslims And Hindus Alike, Rich And Poor. He Became Convinced Of Two Things About India Throughout His Two-year Sojourn: One, There Was No Hope For India Because The Masses Were Living In Abject Poverty And Nothing Was Done For Their Advancement;
Two: Since Religion Was The Foundation Of Indian Civilization, Any Attempt At Reform That Disregarded Or Sought To Destroy Indians’ Innate Religiosity (Regardless Of Whose Religion They Belonged To) Would Fail In This Country. He Sat In Meditation On A Rock At Kanyakumari, India’s Southernmost Tip, In December 1892 After Seeing The Plight Of The Country’s Poor, And He Was Given A Spiritual Vision. He Envisioned A Radiant India Of The Future.
And He Had A Plan Of Action. The Twin Ideals Of India Were Renunciation And Service, And Vivekananda Believed That Any Attempt At National Regeneration In This Country Should Be Made With These Ideals In Mind. The G Od Preached By Hinduism Is The Divinity Present In Man, Vivekananda Had Realised At The Same Time. Spiritualism And Patriotism Came Together In Kanyakumari To Create Vivekananda’s Vision Of Serving God In Man.
Additionally, He Understood That The Time Had Come When No Region Of The World Could Prosper Alone. Thus, There Was A Direct Link Between The Development Of India And The Rest Of The World. He Had Heard About The Next World Parliament Of Religions, Which Was Going To Be Held In Chicago, Back In His Parivrajaka Days. A Few Of His Disciples And Adherents, In Particular The Raja Of Ramnad, Thought He Ought To Attend The Parliament. Vivekananda Eventually Came To Believe That He Should Follow Suit. His Followers, Particularly Those In Madras, Raised Money For His Journey To The West, And The Raja Of Khetri Also Helped To Make This Journey Possible.
We Are So Many Sannyasins, Wandering About And Teaching The People Metaphysics— It Is All Madness, I Had A Plan At Cape Comorin Sitting In Mother Kumari’s Temple, Sitting On The Last Bit Of Indian Rock. D Isn’t It True That Our Gurudeva Once Said, “An Empty Stomach Is No Good For Religion”? What If Some Disinterested Sannyasins, Bent On Doing Good To Others, Travel From Village To Village, Disseminating Education And Seeking In Numerous Ways To Improve The Condition Of All Down To The Chandala, Through Oral Teaching, And By Means Of Maps, Cameras, Globes, And Such Other Means? That These Poor People Are Leading The Life Of Brutes Is Simply Due To Ignorance… A If The Mountain Does Not Come To Mohammed, Mohammed Must Go To The Mountain, According To C C E Sso Rie S. We Need To Raise The Masses And Restore The Nation’s Lost Individuality.
Vivekananda Sailed From Bombay For America On May 31, 1893. The Ship Travelled Through China, Hawaii, And Japan Before Arriving In Vancouver In July, From Where The Swami Travelled To Chicago. On September 11, 1893—inauguration Day—vivekananda Delivered His First Lecture At The Parliament Of Religions In Chicago. Given His Personality, Articulation, And Authenticity As A Result Of Spiritual Realisation, He Was An Immediate Success At The Parliament. At The Parliament On September 15, 19, 20, 26, And 27, He Delivered Five Additional Lectures.
“I Am Proud To Belong To A Religion Which Has Taught The World Both Tolerance And Universal Acceptance,” Said Swamiji. We Accept All Religions As True In Addition To Holding A Belief In Universal Tolerance.
“I Fervently Hope That The Bell That Tollled This Morning In Honour Of This Convention May Be The Death-knell Of All Fanaticism, Of All Persecutions With The Sword Or With The Pen, And Of All Uncharitable Feelings Between Persons Wending Their Way To The Same Goal,” He Said, Explaining That The Parliament Itself Signified That It Was Time To Bid Sectarianism, Bigotry, And Fanaticism Farewell. The Ancient Vedanta Wisdom That “The Human Soul Is Eternal And Immortal, Perfect And Infinite, And Death Is Just A Change Of Centre From One Body To Another” Was Upheld In Front Of The People By Him.
The Swami Also Said That India Didn’t Need Missionaries To Teach Them Religion; Rather, The Country Needed Food That Could Feed Its Starving People. He Claimed That This Was Why He Had Come To The West In The First Place.
He Also Outlined The Foundation For Interreligious Cooperation. God Forbid That A Christian Convert To Hinduism Or Vice Versa, He Said. It Is Impossible To Impose One Dogma On Everyone. A Hindu, Buddhist, Or Christian “Must Assimilate The Spirit Of The Others While Maintaining His Individuality And Growing According To His Own Law Of Growth,” Much As Plants Do.
If The Parliament Of Religions Has Shown Anything To The World, It Is That Holiness, Purity, And Charity Are Not The Exclusive Provinces Of Any One Church And That Every Religious System Has Produced Individuals Of The Highest Character. In Light Of This Evidence, Anyone Who Imagines That Their Religion Will Be The Only One To Survive While The Others Are Destroyed Deserves My Deepest Sympathy. I Will Also Remind Him That, In Spite Of His Resistance, The Following Phrases Will Soon Be Written On The Banner Of Every Religion: “Help And Not Fight,” “Assimilation And Not Destruction,” “Harmony And Peace And Not Dissension.”
Following The Conclusion Of The Parliament, Vivekananda Gained Popularity In America. He Was Aware That Spreading The Ancient Spiritual Knowledge Of India Across The World Was His Divinely Appointed Mission. He Delivered A Number Of Lectures Between 1893 And 1896 In Both Public And Private Settings Throughout The East Coast And Midwest Of America As Well As In London, Europe. Many Sincere Western Spiritual Seekers Became His Disciples.
The Swami Travelled By Train To Italy From London While Being Accompanied By His Western Friends And Disciples. He Sailed Back For India From Naples On December 30, 1896, After Seeing Many Italian Cities, And Arrived At Colom Bo On January 15, 1897. A Wonderful Reception Awaited Him In Colom Bo. He Gave A Few Family Lectures In Colom Bo And Agreed To Go On A Tour Of Several Cities In Ceylon, Giving Lectures And Attending Reception Events, At The Request Of The Locals. He Arrived At Pamban On January 26 From Ceylon. Following A Few Stops In Tamil Nadu,
After Travelling For A Long Time, He Finally Arrived At Madras, Where He Received A Tremendous Welcome From The Populace. He Remained In Madras For A While So That He Could Give Some Of His Most Significant Lectures In India. He Then Returned To Calcutta, Where He Was Again Met With A Grand Reception. He Then Gave A Lecture In Kolkata.
He Established The Ramakrishna Mission And Ramakrishna Math On May 1, 1897, With Its Main Campus In Belur, Outside Of Kolkata. Atmano Mokshartham Jagat Hitaya Cha (For One’s Spiritual Liberation And For The Welfare Of The World) Is The Institution’s Motto. His Motivation For Founding This Organisation Was To Spread Sri Ramakrishna’s Teachings As Well As The Ancient Vedantic Teachings Of The Upanisads.
“Each Soul Is Potentially Divine,” Said Vivekananda. The Objective Is To Make This Divinity Manifest. The Mission Included Carrying Out Charitable Endeavours In The Spirit Of Serving God In Humanity. The Swami Travelled To Northern India On A Lecture Tour After Leaving Bengal, Starting In Alm Ora. Again, He Was Greeted With A Huge Welcome And Kind Greeting Wherever He Went. As A Result, He Delivered Lectures In A Number Of Cities In Uttarakhand, Punjab, Kashmir, Modern-day Pakistan, Rajasthan, And Madhya Pradesh.
Then, Upon His Return To Calcutta, He Continued The Work On The Ram Akrishna Math And Mission By Training Many Disciples And Monks, Initiating Them, And Establishing Branch Centres In Several Other Cities. Later, He Returned To Alm Ora And Travelled Extensively Across Kashmir. These Two Trips Were Specifically Intended To Serve As Training Opportunities For The Western Disciples Who Had Travelled To India To Support The Cause.
Previously, I Believed That This Was Punya Bhumi, The Land Of Karma. I’m Saying It With The Conviction Of Truth Now As I Stand Here. If There Is Any Land On This Planet That Can Claim To Be The Blessed Punya Bhumi, To Be The Land To Which All Souls On This Planet Must Come To Account For Karma, To Be The Land To Which Every Soul That Is Wending Its Way Godward Must Come To Attain Its Last Home, The Land Where Humanity Has Attained Its Highest Toward Gentleness, Generosity, Purity, Calmness, Above All, The Land Of Introspection And O
Vivekananda Embarked On His Second Journey To The West On June 20, 1899, And Arrived At Ndon On July 31. He Departed For America After London In Order To Finish The Work He Had Started There. He Mostly Taught In California And New York. He Travelled To Europe In 1900 To Attend The Paris Congress On The History Of Religions. The Swami Had Met Some Of The Top Academics And Intellectuals Researching India And, Specifically, Hinduism On Both Of His Trips To Europe.
He Visited Many Cities During This Tour Of Europe, Including Vienna And Constantinople, Before Arriving At Belur Math In December 1900. Vivekananda Could See This Wish Come True In The Form Of The Advaita Ashrama In Mayavati While Work On An Ashrama In The Himalayas Had Advanced In India (Champawat, Uttarakhand). He Spent Time In Belur, Mayavati, And A Few Pilgrimage Sites Like Bodh Gaya, Varanasi, And Others In East Bengal And Assam Over The Next Two Years After His Return. On July 4, 1902, Swami Vivekananda Attained Mahasamadhi In Belur Math And Finally Released His Mortal Coil.
The World Parliament Of Religions In Chicago Was Significant Because Vivekananda Was The First Indian Spiritual Giant To Go To The West And Represent The Hindu Religion. In Actuality, This Historic Event Paved The Way For Future Exchanges Between India And The United States, Particularly In The Field Of Spirituality.
More Importantly, Vivekananda Placed Emphasis On The Universal Aspects Of Hinduism, Especially Andvedanta, Rather Than Presenting It From A Sectarian Perspective. He Stressed The Weakness Of Religious Diversity And Universalism. Vivekananda Preached That All Spiritual Paths Lead To The Truth, And This Teaching Was Based On Their Spiritual Realisations, Following In The Footsteps Of His Master Sri Ramakrishna.
