The Blessed Sacrament is a devotional name to refer to the body and blood of Christ in the form of consecrated sacramental bread and wine at a celebration of the Eucharist. Christians in these traditions believe in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharistic elements and practice Eucharistic reservation and adoration. The Most Holy Eucharist has been central to Catholic life since the First Holy Thursday. Through the Mass, we come to a deeper union with Christ, our Lord and Savior. Through prayer, we come to a deeper knowledge of Our Lord and ourselves. This booklet of prayers is meant to help us find a place to start. St. Alphonsus Liguori observed that praying fifteen minutes before the Blessed Sacrament is more beneficial than other spiritual exercises.St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) and John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801-1890) both express their love for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. St. Francis of Assisi places himself in the presence of Jesus, who is present as God and as man, in soul and in body, in true flesh and blood. John Henry Cardinal Newman places himself in the presence of Jesus, who is the true Bread of his soul and his everlasting joy.
Our Father, Hallowed by Thy name, give us daily bread, forgive us our trespasses, lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil. Glory be to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The prayer before the Reception of the Eucharist is a litany of the Holy Name of Jesus, asking for mercy and forgiveness from God the Father and the Holy Spirit. It also asks for forgiveness from those who have confessed their sins to Jesus, and for the Church to rejoice in His constant protection and consolation. The litany concludes with the words, “Have mercy on us Jesus, Son of the living God, Redeemer of the World, God the Holy Spirit, one God, have mercy on us Jesus, Son of the living God, Son of the Virgin Mary, worth of our love, worth of our wonder, mighty God, prince of peace, all powerful, pattern of patience, model of obedience, gentle and humble of heart, lover of chastity, lover of us all.”St. Francis of Assisi, Pope John XXIII, and St. Thomas More all prayed for the presence of Jesus on the altar, the teaching of the Sacrament of the Altar, the support of the weak, the comfort of the suffering, the wayfaring bread of salvation for the dying, and the pledge of future glory.
The speaker adores Jesus Christ and thank Him for all the graces He has bestowed upon them. They also salute His loving Heart for three purposes: thanksgiving, making amends, and adoring Him in all places on earth. They also recommend the souls in purgatory and all poor sinners. Finally, they unite their affections with the affections of His loving Heart and beseech Him to accept them. The litany of the Blessed Sacrament is a prayer of adoration for Jesus, the God of Love, who is present in the Most Holy Sacrament and who has come to his own but were not received by them. The prayer asks Jesus to unite himself with the faithful soul and allow his divine love to reign within. It also asks Jesus to break all his fetters and strip him of all that is not of himself, so that his love may be his life here below and his happiness and delight in eternity.
