“The Oscars, also referred to as the Academy Awards, are prizes given to American film producers for outstanding artistic and technical achievement. Many people consider the awards to be the most prestigious and important ones in the American entertainment sector. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) presents the Oscars each year to honour outstanding cinematic achievements in films, especially those made in America, as determined by the Academy’s voting membership”.
The “Academy Award of Merit,” which is more generally known by its nickname, the “Oscar,” is given to the winners of each category in the form of a replica of the statuette. The figurine, which features an Art Deco-styled rendering of a knight, was originally created by Los Angeles artist George Stanley based on an art director’s concept drawing.
In 1929, Douglas Fairbanks hosted a special luncheon at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel when the first Academy Awards were presented. The first radio broadcast of the Academy Awards ceremony took place in 1930, while the first television broadcast occurred in 1953. It is the oldest entertainment awards show in the world and is currently broadcast live on television. The Tony Honors for theatre, the Grammy Awards for music, and the Emmy Awards for television are all fashioned after the Academy Awards, which is also the oldest of the four main annual American entertainment awards. Since its debut in 1929, 3,140 Oscar statuettes have been given out.
The Academy Award of Merit, also referred to as the Oscar statuette, Is the most well-known honour. [13] It is 13.5 in (34.3 cm) tall, 8.5 lbs(3.856 kg) in weight, and features an Art Deco-styled knight holding a sword while standing on a reel of film with five spokes. It is made of gold-plated bronze on a black metal base. The five spokes stand in for the Academy’s founding branches: writers, directors, producers, technicians, and actors.
Rules for Nomination of a Movie:
A movie must have premiered and played for seven straight days In Los Angeles County, California, during the preceding calendar year, from midnight on January 1 to midnight on December 31 in order to be eligible for the Academy Awards (except for the Best International Feature Film, Best Documentary Feature, and awards in short film categories). A minimum of one of the daily showings must begin between 6 pm and 10 pm local time, and the movie must be seen at least three times each day during its qualifying run.
The Hurt Locker, the 2009 Best Picture winner, was first released in 2008 but did not qualify for the 2008 awards since its Los Angeles qualifying run did not begin until mid-2009, making it eligible for the 2009 awards. Each nation may submit just one film for consideration in the International Feature Film category each year, and foreign films must include English subtitles.
Except for short-subject honours, Rule 2 stipulates that a film must be a feature-length, or at least 40 minutes, and that it must be in a 24 or 48 frame/s progressive scan digital cinema format with a minimum projector resolution of 2048 by 1080 pixels. [60] The Best Documentary Feature award has been outlawed for multi-part and limited series since the 90th Academy Awards, which were held in 2018. This came after O.J.: Made in America, an eight-hour presentation that debuted in a restricted run before being aired in five parts on ABC and ESPN, won the title in 2017. The new rule wasn’t specifically mentioned in the announcement from the Academy about that movie.
