One Of The Best-known And Dearest Prayers In The Roman Catholic Tradition Is That Of The Litany Of The Blessed Virgin Mary, Commonly Known As The Litany Of Loreto.
This Litany Had Its Roots In The Middle Ages And Has Maintained A Significant Place Within Catholic Devotion Throughout The Centuries. This Litany Is A Series Of Invocations And Their Answers In Praise Of The Virgin Mary, The Mother Of Jesus Christ. Although Pope Sixtus V, In 1587, Made The Litany Of Loreto Formally Official For Public Recitation, The Litany Goes Far Back In History. It Probably Originated From Older, Marian Litanies And Prayers That Were In Use Throughout Medieval Europe. Its Exact Origin Is Uncertain, But, In The Early Church, Litanies Were A Frequently Practiced Form Of Prayer, Often Incorporated During Processions And In Liturgical Worship.
In The Fifteenth Century, The Shrine Of Loreto Had Gained Reputation As Marian Pilgrimage Center, Where Litany Was One Among Many Chanted. The Litany Was Considered To Be, Where The Home Mary Resided During Her Time In Nazareth And Where She Was Visited By The Angel, The Holy Home Of Loreto. The House Is Said To Have Been Mystically Carried To Loreto In 1294 By Angels. This Must Have Been The Reason The Litany Was Well Received And Most Prefered.
The Litany Of The Blessed Virgin Mary Consists Of A Series Of Invocations With The Response For Each.
