The Responsibility Of Surveying And Assessment Of Country’s Forest Resources Lies Primarily With The Forest Survey Of India (Fsi)ii.

It Was Originally The Food And Agriculture Organisation Of The United Nations, The United Nations Development Programme, And A Government Of India Project Started In 1965. The Name At That Time Was The Pre-investment Survey Of Forest Resources, Pisfr. Its Present Form, The Forest Survey Of India, Came In 1981, With The Increasing Range Of Activities For Pisfr Due To Changing Information Needs.

The “India State Of Forest Report 2021” Was Prepared By Forest Survey Of India (Fsi), And Was Released On 13 January 2022 By Shri Bhupender Yadav, Minister For Environment, Forests, And Climate Change.

The India State Of Forest Report, 2021, Brings Information On Forests’ Carbon Stock, Tree Cover, Mangrove Cover, Growing Stock, Monitoring Of Forest Fires, Forest Cover In Tiger Reserve Areas, Above-ground Biomass Estimates Using Sar Data, And Climate Change Hotspots In The Country.

Fsi Has Incorporated A New Chapter Relating To The Assessment Of Forest Cover In Tiger Reserves, Corridors, And Lion Conservation Areas Of India In The Present Isfr 2021. In This Context, The Decadal Assessment Of Change In Forest Cover In Tiger Reserves, Corridors, And Lion Conservation Areas Aids In Assessing The Impact Of Various Conservation Measures And Management Interventions Taken From Time To Time.

A Chapter On The Estimation Of “Above Ground Biomass” Has Also Been Recorded As A Part Of Another Recent Initiative Of Fsi. Fsi, In Collaboration With The Space Application Centre (Sac), Isro, Ahmedabad, Has Initiated A Special Study For The Estimation Of Above-ground Biomass At The Pan-indian Level Using L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar Data. Agb Maps And The Results For The States Of Assam And Odisha Were Earlier Presented At Isfr 2019.

The Interim Results For Agb Estimates (And Agb Maps) For The Whole Nation Are Now Being Presented In A New Chapter In Isfr 2021. The Study Would Be Completed Before The Detailed Report Is Published.

The Total Forest And Tree Cover Of The Country Is 80.9 Million Hectares, Which Is 24.62 Percent Of Its Total Geographic Area. The Total Forest And Tree Cover Of The Country Has Increased By 2261 Sq Km As Compared To The Assessment In 2019.

Open Forests Have Contributed To The Increase In Forest Cover, Followed By Very Dense. The Top Five States With Increased Forest Cover Are Jharkhand With 110 Sq Km, Karnataka With 155 Sq Km, Odisha With 537 Sq Km, Telangana With 632 Sq Km, And Andhra Pradesh With 647 Sq Km.

In Terms Of Area, The Largest Forest Cover Is In Madhya Pradesh, Followed By Maharashtra, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, And Odisha. Mizoram With 84.53 Per Cent, Arunachal Pradesh With 79.33 Per Cent, Meghalaya With 76.00 Per Cent, Manipur With 74.34 Per Cent, And Nagaland With 73.90 Per Cent Are The Top Five States In Terms Of Forest Cover As A Percentage Of Total Geographic Area.

In 17 States And The United States, Forests Cover More Than 33 Percent Of The Geographic Area. Twelve Of These States And Union Territories—manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Goa, Kerala, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Assam, Odisha—have A Forest Cover Between 33 And 75 Percent, While The Remaining Five—lakshadweep, Mizoram, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, And Meghalaya—have More Than 75 Percent.

The Country’s Tree Cover, Comprising The Out-of-forest Open Areas, Is Increasing. The Estimated Amount Of Tree Cover In The Country Is 95,748 Square Kilometers, Or 2.91 Percent Of The Total Geographic Area. The Total Forest And Tree Cover Of The Country Is Almost One-fourth Of Its Total Geographical Area; This Gives The Complete Perspective Of All The Forest And Tree Resources Of The Country. As Per The Latest Estimate, The Total Forest And Tree Cover Of The Country Is 8,09,537 Square Kilometers, Which Is 24.62 Percent Of Its Total Geographical Area. The Entire Country’s Forest And Tree Cover Has Increased By 2261 Square Kilometers From The Last Assessment.

The Current Stock In The Country’s Forests And Trees Outside Forests Is More Than What It Was During The Last Assessment. Total Growing Stock Of Wood Is Estimated To Be About 6167.50 Million Cubic Meters Out Of Which 1,779.35 Million Are Outside Of Officially Recognized Forest Areas And 4388.15 Million Inside Forest Areas. Against The Previous Assessment Reported In Isfrr 2019, An Overall Increase Of 251.74 Million Cubic Meters, That Is 4.26 Percent, In The Total Growing Stock Of The Nation Has Been Assessed.

Out Of This, The Increase Inside The Forest Area Comes To The Extent Of 2.68 Percent Or 114.68 Million Cubic Meters And Outside The Forest Area, It Goes Up To 8.35 Percent Or 137.06 Million Cubic Meters.
