The 64th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony was held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 3, 2022. The ceremony was originally scheduled for January 31, 2022, but was rescheduled to April 3, 2022 due to scheduling conflicts with the Crypto.com Arena. The 2022 ceremony announced changes to categories and rules, increasing the number of nominees in each category from eight to ten. Best Dance Recording was renamed Best Dance/Electronic Recording, for Album of the Year, singles became eligible for Best Orchestral Performance, Best Choral Performance, Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance, Best Classical Instrumental Solo, and Best Contemporary Classical Composition.
Nominees were nominated and/or awarded for albums consisting of new recordings and principal artists with significant performances, music-related documentaries must contain at least 51% of performance-based material, and a Technical Grammy Award was added. Nomination changes were made to ensure the quality of voting, and Drake was removed from contention for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Album. The ceremony was postponed due to health and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 Omicron variant.
The Grammys had their origin in the Hollywood Walk of Fame project in the 1950s. After a mail-in contest, the name was chosen to honor Thomas Edison, the inventor of the phonograph. The first award ceremony was held in 1959 and the number of awards given grew, eventually reaching over 100. The Latin Grammy Awards were first televised in 1971. The Latin Grammy Awards were established in 2000 to honor works recorded in Spanish or Portuguese from anywhere around the world.
The ceremony was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and moved from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas due to scheduling conflicts.
The Grammy Awards are four awards that are not restricted by music genre. The Album of the Year award is presented to the performer, featured artists, songwriter(s), and/or production team of a full album if other than the performer. The Record of the Year award is presented to the performer and/or production team of a single song if other than the performer. The Best New Artist award is presented to a promising breakthrough performer who in the eligibility year releases the first recording that establishes their public identity.
Other awards are given for performance and production in specific genres and for other contributions. And merged the categories for traditional and contemporary blues, traditional and contemporary folk, world music, and classical albums.
The Recording Academy renamed the gospel genre field to Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music in 2012, and since then, small adjustments have been made to categories and genre fields. Performance categories were added for Americana and alternative music genres, and songwriter categories were added.
The Grammys have been criticized for generally awarding commercially successful albums rather than critically successful ones. Sinead O’Connor became the first musician to refuse a Grammy in 1991, boycotting the ceremony after being nominated for Record of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. Nomination review committees were established following the 37th Grammy Awards, which attracted criticism for the slate of Album of the Year nominations. Mariah Carey was nominated for six awards for her album Daydream, but ultimately lost in all her nominated categories.
The 54th Grammy Awards have revealed a deep chasm between the recording academy’s goals and the listening habits of the general population. Journalist Touré expressed displeasure with the awards, comparing understanding the Grammys to Kremlinology. Justin Vernon of Bon Iver responded to a nomination for his group, saying he would go and be like, “This is for my parents, because they supported me, but I kinda felt like going up there and being like, ‘Everyone should go home, this is ridiculous’. Bon Iver reaffirmed his sentiment that people should not be gathering in a big room and pretending that this is important. He noted that 90% of the people in the room are hoping to get an award and don’t know who the voters are. After winning the 54th Grammy Awards, Vernon said it was hard to accept the award, as he did it for the inherent reward of making songs.
Steve Stoute of The Huffington Post criticized the Recording Academy and the Grammy Awards for having “lost touch with contemporary popular culture”. He accused the academy of snubbing artists with more cultural impact, citing losses by Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP and Kanye West’s Graduation (2007) in the Album of the Year category. Stoute argued that the Grammys has become a series of hypocrisies and contradictions, leaving him to question why any contemporary popular artist would even participate. The Weeknd was shut out from the Grammys in 2020 due to his fourth studio album, After Hours, receiving no nominations.
He responded by calling the Grammys “corrupt” and speculating that his Super Bowl performance and discrepancy of being nominated as pop music versus R&B contributed to the snubs. Harvey Mason, Jr. responded by empathizing with Tesfaye’s feelings.
Brown’s 1965 classic “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” became one of the first funk hits, and the genre thrived in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Bootsy Collins and George Clinton created P-funk, an Afrofuturistic, psychedelic exploration of funk. In the 1980s, electro-funk was born with robotic vocals distorted through a talk box, influencing hip-hop, funk and electronica, and current acts like Chromeo, DJ Stingray, and Egyptian Lover keep it alive. Funk is a popular genre of music, with nu-disco, boogie funk, G-funk, ‘70s revival, and dreamy, atmospheric music. Five current modern funk and nu-disco artists are Say She She, Ghost Funk Orchestra, Parcels, Dua Lipa, Doja Cat, Silk Sonic, and Khruangbin. Say She She’s debut single “Forget Me Not” is an ode to Guerilla Girls and their protest anthem “Norma” is a protest anthem in response to the news of Roe vs. Wade being overturned. Moniquea is a boogie funk artist from Pasadena, California, who has been a star artist on MoFunk Records since 2011. Shiro Schwarz is a Mexico City-based duo, whose music is both nostalgic and futuristic. Shiro Schwarz, L’Impératrice, Franc Moody, and Saucy Lady are all performing together.
Franc Moody is a London outfit born in the early 2010s and has six members, including singer and multi-instrumentalist Amber-Simone. Their music feels at home with other electro-pop bands like Jungle and Parcels.
