The Federal Clean Air Act, under Section 8, requires persons working with regulated refrigerants to be certified.
There are four types of certification:
Type I – limited to small appliances (5 lbs. or less refrigerant)
Type II – limited to medium, high and very high pressure appliances
Type III – limited to low pressure appliances
Universal – for persons who hold all Type I, II and III certificaitons
EPA regulations (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F) under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act define a “technician” as an individual who performs any of the following activities:
EPA has developed four types of certification:
Type I. Persons who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of small appliances must be certified as Type I technicians. A small appliance is defined as a pre-assembled unit, hermetically sealed, and factory charged with 5 lbs. or less of refrigerant. Examples include equipment such
as water coolers, window units, refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, ice machines, and package terminal air conditioning. Split systems are not included in Type I.
Type II. Persons who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of the medium, high, and very high-pressure appliances containing more than 5 lbs. of refrigerant or if the installation of such equipment requires refrigerant charging, must be certified as Type II technicians High-pressure refrigerants have a pressure between 155 psig & 340 psig at a liquid phase temperature of 104°F and medium pressure refrigerants have a pressure between 30 psig & 155 psig at a liquid phase temperature of 104°F. Type II certification does not include small appliances or motor vehicle air conditioning (MVAC) systems.
Type III. Persons who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of low-pressure appliances (centrifugal and chillers) must be certified as Type III technicians. Low-pressure refrigerants have pressures of 30 psig or lower at a liquid phase temperature of 104°F.
Universal To be certified as Universal, a technician must pass all four sections; Core, Type I, Type II, and Type III
Parts I, Ii, And Iii In Addition To The Core Make Up The Test’s Four Parts. There Are Twenty-five (25) Multiple-choice Questions In Each Section. In Order To Be Certified, A Technician Must Have A Minimum Score Of 70% In Each Group Or Section. For Instance, A Technician Pursuing Universal Certification Has To Pass Each Portion Of The Exam With A Minimum Score Of 70%, Or 18 Out Of 25.
A Technician May Repeat The Section(S) They Failed Without Taking The Section(S) In Which They Received A Passing Grade If They Fail One Or More Of The Sections. The Technician Will Be Certified In The Type For Which They Obtained A Passing Grade In The Interim. There Is One Exception; In Order To Acquire Any Certification, A Technician Must Have A Passing Score On The Core Plus Anyone Type.
There Are 25 General Knowledge Questions In The Core Covering Topics Such As Stratospheric Ozone Depletion, The Clean Air Act’s Rules And Regulations, The Montreal Protocol, Refrigerant Recovery, Recycling, And Reclaiming, Recovery Devices, Substitute Refrigerants And Oils, Recovery Techniques, Dehydration, Recovery Cylinders, Safety, And Shipping. 25 Questions On The Small Appliance Market Are Included In Section I. Section Ii Has 25 Questions That Are Industry-specific To The Medium- And High-pressure Appliance Sectors, While Section Iii Contains 25 Questions That Are Industry-specific To The Low-pressure Appliance Sectors.
This Exam Must Be Administered As A Closed Book Exam By An Authorized Test Administrator (Proctor) In Accordance With Federal Regulations. Calculator Use Is Prohibited Throughout The Test; Only A Temperature/pressure Chart Is Permitted. Phones Must Be Put Away (Not On The Desktop) And Switched Off Throughout The Test; They Are Not Permitted To Be Utilized.
